Complete Makers list > Liz Hamman
Liz is a mixed media artist from Cheshire and has been designing/making since completing her Fine Art training in 2007 where she specialised in sculpture and textiles. Her work usually makes use of unwanted books, maps and other ephemera.
Paper possible isn't an obvious choice as a material for jewellery, it is humble and transient. Books however are treasured items even though they often sit on our shelves gathering dust. The memory, experience and contents of a book can stay with us for all of our lives and can be as valued as the family jewels. Liz is interested in exploring these contrasting qualities of value/non value, transience/longevity and to remember that the end of the book isn't necessarily the end of the story.
All pieces are made by Liz and often make use of other recycled/repurposed and natural materials to compliment the paper. She uses various methods of manipulating the paper such as origami, weaving, stacking and laminating. Every piece she makes is totally unique even if overall designs can be similar. She usually provides details of the book or map used such as its ISBN number where possible. This is just in the event that you might want to read it!
All the jewellery has been finished with water based lacquer which makes it surprisingly durable. We wouldn't however advise wearing it while swimming, bathing or in the case of a bracelet, doing the washing up.
